and breaking news is in vallejo. homes evacuated and power knocked out to hundreds of customers after an underground vault caught fire. i'm kristen sze. >> and i'm cheryl jennings. we're on the scene and amy hollyfield joins us live. >> reporter: here is the transform they're caught on fire. it was under ground right in front of this home on almond avenue. neighbors tell us that the

people weren't here. next-door neighbors weren't home and two doors down were home. it happened right after people left for work. take a look what they saw when they came rushing out. there was fire shooting out from under ground. this happened in front of a house where there was transformer to the transformer under ground was on fire. pg&e says it knocked power out for 800 customers in vallejo. people living here say it was something to wake up to. >> it was a big bang in the morning like 7:50. it was like fire coming out. >> they were shocked to hear a big bang. >> reporter: pg&e has been working on the situation ever since and say at this point, 13 customers are without power. so they have made

significant progress out here. they don't know when they'll be able to get the power back on. look at this burned out transformer they have to replace that and anything else that was damaged in the fire under ground. they don't know how long it's going to take and after they figure it out, then they will try to figure out why it happened. reporting live in vallejo, "abc 7 news." >> we're following another breaking story out of pleasant hill where gas leak has forced road closures. it's closed to traffic because of a large gas leak. police say there is no immediate danger to the public. they do advise drivers on 680 to get around the closure. no word on when repairs will be completed. >> kristen: the family of a union city boy mauled to death by a pit bull has shared a new photo with us. a picture of 6-year-old and the very pit bull that bit him on his head. his aunt released this

photo to abc7 news to warn all families even their beloved pet can turn on them. the dog was euthanized. the boy's uncle owned the dog. >> cheryl: u.s. supreme court did not issue a decision this morning on two major cases involving gay rights. high court is expected to rule eventually on proposition 8. california's ban on same-sex marriage was struck down by a federal judge. if the supreme court upholds that decision, same-sex marriage could begin again in california. the decision is a challenge to doma, which prevention. >> justices could hand down rulings next monday or thursday. >> kristen: happening today bay area nurses and people that oppose the keystone xl pipeline are planning to march. they are joining nurses

with stepping up the call on the obama administration to reject approval of the pipeline. demonstrators against the project protested at both president obama and the vice president this month. they are sending the president the letter it's opposed to the pipeline which would stretch from canada down to the gulf of mexico. >> bart is ulg encouraging drivers leave their cars at home and take public transportation. bart union workers are taking advantage of the campaign to hand out leaflets to raise awareness about contract issues with the company. state mediators have joined the negotiations to avoid a potential strike. talks between the unions are stalled on key issues, such as wages and health benefits. >> to negotiate part of the bargain team. i would love nothing more than to finish this up, get a reasonable contract and go back to work. >> we are looking about

strike contingency plans and if there is a strike we'll have alternative means to get around the bay area. >> cheryl: union contract expires june 30th a week from sunday. facebook has just unveiled a new feature for the popular photo sharing app insta gram. matt is live in men low park with the details. >> reporter: just in the past hour in this building right behind me, on facebook headquarters campus the insta gram cofounder announced details. here is video from live stream. in the past hour the social networking bought instagram last year and has more than a hundred million users. users can share 15 second videos. it's marketed for advertisers and young people are flocking to the technology. just like the photo sharing app you can put your video through a filter.

in from a fremont this morning, it happened at niles off-ramp and shut down lanes right before 9:00 this morning. traffic starred to back-up and you can see the mess there. there might have been as many as seven cars involved in the accident. all the lanes are open again. >> kristen: hundreds of people in mariposa county are back home as threats from a fire subsided. they were forced to leave when a fire broke out sunday near yosemite national park. investigators say the 1600 acre fire was started by an unattended campfire. it's now 55% contained. >> firefighters in arizona are battling a wildfire that is out of control. it's already claimed thousands of acres near prescott national forest. the fire is at zero containment and working to keep the fire from surrounding crews battling

the blaze. more than 400 houses have been evacuated. so far no homes have been lost. happening today, the woman known as boyfriend killer jodi arias is back in court. she was convicted of murder of her boyfriend. they deadlocked on whether to sentence her to death or life in prison. attorneys are trying to work out a deal today. new developments in the case of an adult star caught up in a murder investigation. sources say new england pay trotted aaron hernandez was seeing partying with shooting victim days before his body was found near hernandez's massachusetts home. they have not named him a suspect. they have refiled an unrelated lawsuit against hernandez. it claims he shot a man in the face while leaving a strip club in february. no charges have been filed in that case. >> cheryl: coming up next,

a study finds to drive while texting it's just as risky while walking. the number of pedestrians hourt their phones have doubled in the last five years. researchers analyzed the database that tracked hospital visits. they estimated 1500 pedestrians were admitted for injuries while walking and talking on their phone. >> spurs will try to
